Since 2006, Piet van der Meer teaches biotechnology regulation as a guest professor at the University of Ghent, Belgium, and as of 2014 at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium.
He has provided scientific and regulatory support for biotechnology regulation in over 50 countries to various governments and international organizations. From December 2002 to May 2004, he was in charge of the UNEP-GEF projects on Implementation of National Biosafety Frameworks and managed between 1999 and 2002 the project “Implementation of National Biosafety Frameworks of the pre-accession countries in Central and Eastern Europe”.
Prior to these, he was in charge of biosafety/GMO regulation in the Netherlands during which he was actively involved in many international and EU fora. Van der Meer possesses a Ph.D. in Law and Biology from the University of Leiden, Netherlands.
