Emer Cooke started her mandate as the Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on 16 November 2020. She joined from the World Health Organization (WHO), where she served as Director of the Regulation and Prequalification Department since 2016. In this role she led on WHO’s global work on health technologies regulation, including prequalification, and the strengthening of regulatory systems and safety activities. Her taking up the role as Executive Director marks a return to EMA where she worked from 2002 to 2016, first as Head of Inspections and then as Head of International Affairs. Ms Cooke has 30 years’ experience in international regulatory affairs. As an alumni from Trinity College, Dublin, she holds a degree in pharmacy and additional Masters degrees in Science and in Business Administration.
