European commissioner for health & food safety, EUROPEAN COMMISSION

Vytenis Andriukaitis was appointed European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety in November 2014. Before, he served as Lithuania’s Health Minister from 2012 to 2014. He was a Member of the Lithuanian Parliament for a total of six mandates, serving from 2008 to 2014 and from 1992 to 2004. During this time, he led the Lithuanian delegation to the Convention on the Future of Europe and served as Deputy Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs. He was one of the co-authors of the 1992 Constitution, and a signatory of Lithuania’s independence act. He was also one of the founders of the Lithuanian Social-Democratic party, and in 1990 was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania, which preceded the Lithuanian Parliament. He graduated from the Kaunas Institute of Medicine and was a practicing surgeon for more than 20 years. He also holds a degree in History from Vilnius University.
