Helga Schmid is Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), a position she has held since 2016. In her role, Schmid oversees the daily operations of the EEAS headquarters and diplomatic corps. Previously, she was Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs at EEAS from 2011 to 2016 and Director of the Policy Planning and Early Warning Unit (Policy Unit) of the High Representative for the CFSP in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union from 2006 to 2010. Prior to that, Schmid served in the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Head of the Political Staff of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin and Head of the Minister’s Office from 2003 to 2005, after serving as Deputy Head from 2000 to 2003. She was Political Advisor to both Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer from 1998 to 2000 and Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel from 1994 to 1998. She is a graduate from Diplomatic Academy in international and European law, economics, and international relations.
