Helga Stevens is a Member of the European Parliament representing the Flemist N-VA party of Belgium. She is the first female deaf Member of the European Parliament, and serves as Vice-President of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group and Co-Chair of the EP Disability Intergroup. Additionally, Stevens is a Member of the Civil Liberties, Home Affairs and Justice Committee (LIBE) and the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL). Previously, Stevens held a double political mandate, being a Member of the Flemish Parliament and of the Belgian Senate. Prior to that, she served on the Ghent City Council. From 2005 to 2007, she was President of the European Union of the Deaf (EUD). In 1993 Helga Stevens was the first deaf person to be conferred with a law degree in Belgium (Licentiate in Law) from the Catholic University of Leuven. She also holds a Master of Laws degree (LL.M) from the University of California in Berkeley, USA.
